Bad Michael Is Really Bad

So I was thinking about Bad Michael off of Lost the other day (Bad Michael is our nickname for him. Sometimes we call him Captain Scumbag, this should give you an indication of what we think of the character). What was annoying me about him in particular was how he was portrayed after the deaths of Ana-Lucia and Libby. The program made spectacular efforts to try to portray him as a decent guy who just happened to be in an awful situation where he had no choice but to kill and betray his friends. The show even went to the extent to give him a heroic sacrifice, and then recently (minor SPOILERS for Everyone Loves Hugo) bring him back as a ghost all remorseful and like 'please tell Libby that I am super sorry I killed her'. Yeah because that makes it all okay, if you're sorry. The fact of the matter is that he was a selfish bastard. A dumb selfish bastard at that. Sure he was all sad that he had to kill Ana-Lucia and Libby but the thing is he didn't have to. He could have been straight with Jack and the rest and told them that the others had Walt and were making him release Ben and all that. Together they could have worked out a clever scheme wherein they let the others think he's still on their side and then have a big fuck off ambush ready and waiting. Don't get me wrong. I love the storyline. I think it was a very exciting storyline that was done well and the whole killing of Ana-Lucia and Libby was such a shock it was great. The smart option would likely have been far less entertaining and would have sent events off in a different, unwanted direction. The storyline was good. The constant implications that Michael was a good person in a bad situation are completely wrong, insulting to our intelligence as an audience and by now somewhat redundant. After all we do have alternate universes and time travel and all that going on now. Who really cares about how guilty Bad Michael feels any more? Speaking of which I just know that at some point we're going to have to endure an alternate universe of Bad Michael and Walt showing just how much of a nice person he is when he is not in a bad situation. This thought makes me sad.
